Why do we call it a process?
Because it consists of a set of steps that lead to a concrete result (tangible or intangible). These steps follow a specific sequence and must abide by certain requirements to move to the next step.
Digital onboarding is composed of several steps that need the application and validation of information of the individual or company, so as to analyze said information for decision making (eg. granting loans or a credit card, open an account, get a subscribe to a service, get access to a site, etc).
What we are looking to achieve is to make sure, in the most effective way possible, that a person is who he/she says he/she is. We can replicate the face-to-face process by combining the information the peroson's ID, picture, and proof of like, with specific soluctions oriented towards verification and validation of each step.
However, the goal is to make this scalable, effortless and without mishaps in the middle.
The intelligence applied when defining this process, step by step, combined with available tools and technology allows for the amount of steps to be reduced to the bare minimum. We are looking for a balance between requirements and user experience.
